The following is a brief narrative of several projects for which RAM-TECH
Engineers has provided design services:
Geisinger Medical Facility,
Wilkes-Barre, PA
RAM-TECH was a consultant to
the lead Architect and was responsible for a MEP/FP site infrastructure survey
and master plan for the future Emergency Room Addition, Physician Office
Building and Parking Garage. The master plan recommendations included upgrading
the main 12,470-volt electrical service, additional generators to support the
increased emergency requirements, additional boilers and chillers were included
as well as an additional fire pump.
REGIONAL LONG TERM CARE HOSPITAL, Rome, NY
Complete renovation of Building #52 at Mohawk Correctional Facility to Long Term
Care Facility. Unit shall include a 36 bed rehabilitation unit, outpatient
clinic, 27 bed pre-post hospitalization unit, and support services. Involved
complete mechanical/ electrical systems upgrade, including plumbing, medical gas
and fire protection systems, heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems,
lighting, power, underground fuel tank, leak detection system, emergency
generator systems, nurse call, fire alarm, security and communications system.
Air systems were 100% outside air with heat recovery wheels. Isolation room air
systems were designed to make the spaces positive or negative in relationship to
adjacent spaces.

JOSEPH'S HOSPITAL HEALTH CENTER, Syracuse, NY
.
Pediatrics Clinic
Complete mechanical/electrical design for converting existing 2nd floor space to
pediatrics clinic. Included extension of existing power systems, new lighting
and nurse call systems and extension of the existing fire alarm system. Also
included the removal and replacement of existing air and water systems.
. Hemodialysis Unit
Complete mechanical/electrical design for a major addition and renovations to
the existing hemodialysis clinic. Included new electrical service with
dieseldriven emergency generator with above ground fuel tank and leak detection
system, and sized to provide standby power for the entire facility. Included new
lighting and power systems for over a dozen hemodialysis stations, nurse call
systems and extension of the existing fire alarm systems, plumbing and sprinkler
systems, plus cable television and sound system. Also included complete new HVAC
systems. Because of tight building constraints, air systems were mounted
adjacent to the building on steel grillage.
. Dental Clinic
Complete mechanical/electrical design of relocated dental clinic from the
Hospital to the 7th floor of the Physician's Office Building. Included provision
of new pressure booster pumps, vacuum pumps and compressors for medical gases,
new lighting and power systems and extension of existing HVAC systems for the
six-chair dental suite, X-ray, laboratory and other support rooms.
. CPEP Unit
Complete mechanical/electrical design involving the conversion of an existing
Convent to the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) Unit, one of
only six similar facilities in existence in the United States. Included the
provision of new sprinkler service, heating, ventilating and air conditioning
systems, as well as new lighting, power and communications systems. All systems
had to meet hospital and office of mental health standards.
. GYN/Women's Services
Complete mechanical/electrical redesign of the existing fourth floor of Building
7 involving the conversion of an existing pediatrics unit to Women’s Services.
Included the provision of new sprinkler and HVAC services and special lighting
systems, along with nurse call, fire alarm and power and communications systems.
. Acute Kidney Unit
Complete mechanical/electrical renovation of an existing space to house a
dialysis unit with purified water systems, new HVAC, plumbing, fire protection,
electrical and communications systems, including fire alarm and nurse call
systems. Involved substantial renovation of sub-basement mechanical and
electrical infrastructure.
. Cardiology and Same Day Recovery
Complete mechanical/electrical design involving the conversion of a patient wing
into a Cardiology unit with special procedure rooms and a 38 - bed same day
recovery suite. Involved extensive upgrade of existing HVAC systems, including
new rooftop and penthouse air handling units which were ducted down the outside
of the existing structure to the 2nd floor ceiling space. Also included were
upgrades of the emergency power electrical systems, fire protection system, fire
alarm system and medical gas and plumbing systems.
. 973 James Street
Complete renovation of the first and second floor of an existing office building
to accommodate dialysis and clinical space for outpatient treatment. Included
new HVAC systems, plumbing systems, fire protection system, electrical,
communication and fire alarm systems. It also included new sanitary service,
outdoor site lighting and a remote outdoor generator for emergency power.

SUNY
UPSTATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, Syracuse, NY
. Gross Anatomy Building Addition and Renovations
Complete mechanical/electrical design for a major addition and renovations to
the existing gross anatomy lab. Included replacement of electrical service for
the associated wing. Included new lighting and power systems for 40 teaching
stations, and extension of the existing fire alarm systems, plumbing and
sprinkler systems. Also included complete new HVAC systems. Specialized exhaust
system was installed to mitigate formaldehyde vapors, this system included heat
recovery to maximize energy efficiency.
. Regional Oncology Center Addition and Renovations
Complete mechanical/electrical design for a major addition and renovations to
the existing oncology center. Included new electrical service with diesel-driven
emergency generator with above ground fuel tank and leak detection system.
Included new lighting and power systems, nurse call systems and extension of the
existing fire alarm systems, plumbing and sprinkler systems for 14 infusion
stations, blood lab, pharmacy and support offices. Also included complete new
HVAC systems.
. Automate “A-B” Switchgear – East Wing
Design an automatic switching scheme, to automatically open either main 5000 amp
480 volt breaker and close the 5000 amp 480 volt tie breaker upon the loss of
power on one side of the double ended switchgear for the East Wing of the
Hospital. The control system automatically returns the system to its normal
state when power is restored.
. Renovations to Jacobsen Hall
RAM-TECH was the prime consultant for the complete architectural, structural,
mechanical and electrical engineering design for fire safety and ADA compliance
improvements for this existing 10-story dormitory, which has been converted to
office space. Code compliance report including asbestos abatement, new fire
service and sprinkler/standpipe system with 60 HP fire pump, new fire alarm
system with voice evacuation capabilities, new electric service, new 150 kW
emergency generator, elevator upgrades and other miscellaneous fire safety
issues including stairwell improvements, egress door modifications and
handicapped toilet rooms, etc.
. Urology Clinic & Offices
RAM-TECH was the prime consultant for the complete architectural, structural,
asbestos abatement and mechanical/electrical engineering design for the
conversion of an existing open office space to a Urology Clinic and Offices.
Included replacement of existing one-story roof and related asbestos abatement,
miscellaneous interior partition, wall and ceiling removals and renovations, new
room finishes and accessories, new roof opening and steel reinforcement for HVAC
unit, provision of new air distribution systems, reusing one existing rooftop
unit and provision of one new unit, provision of new plumbing fixtures and
relocated domestic water systems, sanitary, waste and vent systems and new
lighting and power systems and extension of existing communications and special
systems.
. UPS Installation
Complete coordination of the installation of a new UPS system to a computer
facility, including complete structural analysis and reinforcement of floor
slab, plus review of HVAC and electrical requirements to accommodate same.
. Ambulatory In-Service
Complete renovation of the HVAC systems in former first floor office space into
ambulatory in-service function with patient examination areas. Included the
design of a 15 ton split system air conditioning system.
. Emergency Power Systems
RAM-TECH provided complete architectural and engineering services required for
the complete investigation, report and construction documents in providing
permanently installed emergency power generation systems for the Campus
Activities Building and the Computer Warehouse Building. RAM-TECH determined
that an existing 100 kW generator could be utilized for the CAB Building, while
a new 250 kW unit was required for the Computer Warehouse Building. Both
generators were located remote from the buildings in architecturally designed,
site fabricated buildings to match the existing building architecture.
. Radiation Oncology Dosimetry
Complete electrical and HVAC design to convert former basement Linear
Accelerator Room into computer space, with hub and file server equipment, UPS
and related scanners, etc. Included extension of existing HVAC system and new
lighting, power and communications systems.
. 1 West Moves, Phlebotomy
Complete HVAC, plumbing and electrical design for relocated department in first
floor west. Included HVAC and plumbing alterations to existing systems, new
lighting, power and communications systems.
. Weiskotten Hall Anatomy Labs
Complete HVAC, plumbing and electrical design for Anatomy Department
Laboratories comprised of existing Rooms 1139, 1141 an 1142 without shutdown of
adjoining spaces. Included new laboratory counters and casework, fume hoods, air
handling systems, exhaust systems, electrical panelboards and medical gases.

Norristown State Hospital,
Norristown, PA
RAM-TECH was the prime consultant for the complete architectural, mechanical
and electrical design for the installation of a perimeter security fence;
renovations to the patient ventilation and installation of air conditioning in
untreated spaces. The security fence included man and vehicle access; cut,
climb and tamper detection, CCTV coverage. The heating ventilation and air
conditioning systems included new chillers and new ventilation coils in the
existing air handling units and 4 pipe fan coil units for room conditioning.
Fan coil units were arranged in a vertically stacked arrangement and included
steel floor to ceiling suicide resistant security enclosures in patient rooms.
Electrical systems included service extensions of the campus medium voltage
distribution and security station monitoring and alarm system upgrades. Budget
constraints and minimum disruption to the patient daily routines and
construction phasing in the occupied facility were the critical design criteria
identified and addressed.
CROUSE IRVING MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, Syracuse, NY
. Radiology
Site preparation, including lighting, special systems (nurse call, code blue),
power including X-ray equipment power, raceway and cabling. HVAC modifications
of a dual duct system.
. Echocardiography
Office renovation for the expansion of the echocardiography unit. Renovation
consisted of all electrical lighting, power, special systems and video cabling.
Plumbing work consisted of designing sprinkler and new sinks for the examination
rooms.

Medical Center

Modifications to Buildings 3, 9 and 33

MEDICAL CENTER, Canandaigua, NY
This
project included the incorporation of air conditioning into the upper two floors
of three buildings at the V.A. Medical Center in Canandaigua, New York. RAM-TECH
was responsible for the entire project. The scope of work follows:
General Construction work included construction to incorporate the HVAC system
changes into the existing buildings and replacement of the ceilings throughout
the upper two floors of each building. The construction of chases containing
vertical duct, piping and conduit risers was also included.
Electrical work included new electric service to each building to serve the new
HVAC equipment. New lighting was provided throughout the upper two floors of
each building. Fire protection work included relocation of the existing
sprinkler heads where ceilings were lowered to accommodate ductwork. The HVAC
work consisted of the following: Heating System: Replacement of existing radiant
ceiling panels where present and connection to the existing heating hot water
supply and return piping. Where steam heating existed, the existing steam
heating system was replaced with a new hot water heating system. Hot water
supply and return piping from a steam-to-hot water converter located in the
basement to hot water radiant ceiling panels throughout the building was
included. VAV air conditioning systems were incorporated to provide required
cooling ventilation and supplemental heating to the upper two floors of each
building. Chilled water pumps and supply and return piping from the chiller to
the air handling units in the attic was also included. Ventilation System: The
existing toilet exhaust ventilation was removed and a new combined toilet and
general exhaust system sized to provide the required air change rates ducted
from each space to exhaust fans located in the attic was included. A new DDC
temperature control system was included to control the HVAC systems included in
this project.
SARATOGA HOSPITAL MATERNITY SUITE, Saratoga Springs, NY
Complete mechanical/electrical renovation to existing maternity suite. Included
rework and extension of existing HVAC systems, extension of existing plumbing
and fire protection systems, medical gas systems, new lighting and power
systems, nurse call systems and extension of existing fire alarm systems.
SENECA HILLS HEALTH SERVICES CENTER, Oswego, NY
Complete mechanical/electrical design of new, single story 18,000 sf ambulatory
care facility associated with Oswego Hospital. Included multiple tenant spaces
with dental suites and other treatment areas including a linear accelerator
room, simulator room, x-ray rooms and associated control areas. The HVAC system
is comprised of multiple above-ceiling horizontal furnaces with remote
air-cooled condensing units and a central makeup air unit. There are multiple
gas and electrical meters for various tenants along with special power condition
equipment, medical gases, etc.
VAN
DUYN HOME AND HOSPITAL, Syracuse, NY
. Fire Alarm System
RAM-TECH was the prime consultant in the provision of a new addressable fire
alarm system for the addition of smoke detection to each of the 324 patient
rooms and all necessary connections to the existing system. Also includes the
replacement of existing fire alarm and monitoring system at each of the four
complex buildings and necessary tie to Fire Control Headquarters.
. Security System
RAM-TECH was also the prime consultant in the design and construction
administration for a new security system which included over 36 indoor color and
outdoor black/white cameras, patient wandering system, door hardware, card-key
access and central monitoring station.
NEW
MEDICAL FACILITY, COXSACKIE CORRECTIONAL FACILITY, West Coxsackie, NY
Design of a new 80,000 s.f. medical facility including HVAC, plumbing,
electrical, security communications and emergency generation systems. Also
includes radiology, medical isolation rooms, outpatient clinics, etc.

ELIZABETH MEDICAL CENTER, Utica, NY
. 3rd and 4th Floor Addition/Expansion
Includes ten operating rooms with associated holding and recovery areas, 16
Intensive Care Rooms, and Ambulatory Care Services (Endoscopy, Respiratory, Eye
Laser, etc.). Also included was the replacement of the Central Hospital Heating
And Cooling Plants, including three new 500 boiler horsepower steam boilers and
two 500 ton centrifugal chillers and associated pumps and auxiliaries. In
addition, the electric service to the Hospital was upgraded for the project.
. Radiology Renovations, First Floor
Design of two Radiology Rooms to house Neurostar and Polystar Radiographic
Equipment.
. Other additional St. Elizabeth projects are as follows: 3rd Floor Renovations,
Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Kitchen Cooler, Morgue, Women and Children’s Clinic
and Building 2206 Renovations.
